Nearly two decades ago, I was given an opportunity that quietly but profoundly changed my life.
In June 2009, before I entered St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, I was selected to participate in the JENESYS (Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths) Programme. At the time, I did not fully understand how transformative that journey would be. I only knew that I was traveling abroad to a country I had never seen — Japan.
What followed was an experience that went far beyond travel.
A World Beyond Textbooks
Stepping into Japan felt like entering an entirely new world. From cutting-edge technology and efficient infrastructure to deep-rooted traditions and cultural discipline, everything was unfamiliar and fascinating. Learning about Japan’s technological innovation, social systems, and cultural values through real-life exposure was truly eye-opening. It changed the way I understood the world and how societies function beyond what textbooks could teach.
Learning Through Immersion
What made the experience especially meaningful was the opportunity to interact closely with our Japanese hosts, programme staff, and fellow participants. Living and learning alongside people from different backgrounds taught me adaptability, cultural sensitivity, and respect for diverse perspectives. These were lessons that stayed with me long after the programme ended.
Friendships That Lasted a Lifetime
The connections formed during that journey went far beyond the duration of the programme. I built lasting friendships with others in my group, as well as with our hosts and staff in Japan. These relationships were rooted in shared experiences, conversations, and a genuine exchange of cultures — bonds that remain meaningful even today.
A Defining Moment Before Entering College
Participating in the JENESYS programme came at a pivotal time in my life, just before I began my academic journey at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. The experience gave me confidence, independence, and a broader worldview as I stepped into college life. It helped shape my outlook, sharpen my curiosity, and strengthen my appreciation for global learning.
Why This Experience Matters Today
Looking back, that educational exchange played a significant role in shaping who I am today. It reinforced my belief that thoughtfully designed international exposure can be truly transformative for young students. The learning, growth, and perspective gained from such experiences extend far beyond the journey itself.
This belief lies at the heart of Travel Beyond Co. Educational travel, when done with purpose, creates opportunities for discovery, connection, and lifelong learning — the same kind of experience that Japan gave me all those years ago.
